This is an inscribe ancient stone Shiva footprint. It is originated from the Preah Tiet Bak Jong temple and was built at the back of the Mekong River at Stung Treng Province. This brick temple however has all but vanished after the collapsed into the river several years ago.
Fortunately, this piece of inscribed stone having been salvaged before the collapse of river bank and was later take into added to the collection of the National Museum of Cambodia. According to Khmer art experts who have studied its characteristics this object is dates to the 7th century pre-Angkorian period. Henri Parmentier discovered this Shiva Footprint in 1911.
The Footprint were carved deep into the stone in the shape of lotus flower. Through this inscription, we can understand the importance of this god in Khmer society at that this time. Unfortunately, the inscription does not include any precise date. However, it is assumed that this work was made during the pre-Angkorian period.
