“This is an image of a trident made of schist. It originated from Preah Vihear Thom, Andong Snae, Kampong Cham Province and it currently register in the collection of the National Museum of Cambodia. Based on an examination of its form, this work was sculpted in pre-Angkorian style somewhere between the 6th and 7th centuries. It is a bas-relief on a jar as it supporting base. In the center is in a Sanskrit inscription bearing code number K520, written in two vertical rows.
The letter K stand for Khmer inscription. The inscription speaks about an 80-year-old person who made a linga of Shiva. It says also that was one day the K90 of the man naturally felt off he took them to put in the two holes at the bottom of this trident. The holes were later sealed off with sandstone.
The K90 have always be disappeared, but one of the two holes with the sand stone cork is still visible. Shiva was very popular among artists and the Khmer people in ancient time especially during the Angkorian era. The trident is a weapon with three pointed prongs that Shiva selected as a symbol of his power.”
